John Zalman III
John Zalman is a 1965 graduate of Snyder High School. He earned a BS in Agronomy and Agriculture Education from Texas Tech University. John is a true farm boy, and farming has carried him through his life.
Early on, he had a hobby of photography. John started with 35mm film development and printing. He later added filmmaking with super 8mm. He then acquired a video camera and VCR recorder.
ZTV originated when a parent asked John to film his son’s football game. Several seasons passed, and another parent requested his services.
It then occurred to John that he could broadcast the games on the local cable channel on Saturday after the game. With help from Larry Genunchi, Mike Dennis, and Charles Church, the game had commentary and commercials. From there, instant replay was added, plus statistics and sideline camera.
Football was ZTV’s bread and butter, but their coverage went to all sports, choir and band concerts, graduation, and drama productions, and news stories involving FFA, tennis, golf, and others. John and his team were “a biased group, unashamedly pro Snyder Tigers.” Other than their bias for SHS, they may be best known for their humor in “memorable” commercials.
With the success of covering Snyder ISD activities, ZTV expanded to cover events throughout west Texas. ZTV received the Texas Golden School Bell Award. This was partly due to the videoing of all-local governmental meetings for telecast without editorial, journalist input, observations, or reporting.
